Job Description

Literacy Coach, District Wide

Probationary Appointment        

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Literacy Coach is an instructional role within Waterloo Central School District.  A Literacy Coach leads teachers, and other assigned staff that teach Literacy, to meet students’ academic goals.  The Coach will, at times, provide instruction to students, sometimes by modeling and/or co-teaching with Literacy teachers.  The Coach works with teachers to review student progress and changes instructional strategies to ensure high-progress learning for every child.  The Coach works collaboratively with teachers, using new ideas and innovations that the leader agrees may improve learning.  They will plan and provide professional development for teachers and will work closely with administration to ensure quality instruction is being implemented for both teachers and students. The Coach is fully accountable for the learning and development of all students taught by all Literacy teachers. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Planning and Preparation:
  1. Set direction that clarifies content and teaching process.
  2. Plan and deliver professional development to staff.
  3. Establish methods and create instructional tools and materials that teachers use in all classrooms (data walls, data binders, progress monitoring tools, personalized instructional tools etc).

Lead teachers to:

  1. Set high expectations of achievement that are ambitious and measurable for all students.
  2. Plan backward to align all lessons and activities; design instruction that is enriched (developing higher order thinking skills) and personalized (reflecting learning levels and interests of individual students).
  • Classroom Environment:

Lead teachers to:

  1. Create physical classroom environments conducive to collaborative and individual learning.
  2. Establish a culture of respect, enthusiasm and rapport.
  • Instruction:

Lead teachers to:

  1. Hold students accountable for ambitious, measurable standards of academic achievement.
  2. Identify and address individual students’ social, emotional and behavioral learning needs and barriers. 
  3. Incorporate questioning and discussion in student learning.
  4. Incorporate small-group and individual instruction to personalize and tailor instruction to individual needs of students.
  5. Monitor and analyze student assessment data to inform enriched instruction by teacher.
  6. Communicate with students and keep them informed of their progress.

 

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Solicit and eagerly receive feedback from administration to improve professional skills.
  2. Organize and schedule weekly team/teacher time to ensure alignment of instruction and curriculum implementation.
  3. Allocate instructional process elements with teachers (lesson planning, large-group instruction, small-group instruction, individual interventions, data analysis, grading, etc.).
  4. Model instructional tasks to aid teacher/student development.
  5. Observe and provide feedback to teachers to enhance student achievement and develop teacher effectiveness.
  6. Work with administration to determine professional development needs of teachers.
  7. Plan, lead and participate in professional development opportunities at school, within and beyond the district.

 

SALARY: Minimum $52,315.57 per WEA Contract of agreement with Masters

 

 

Job Qualifications

 

  • NYS Teaching Certification in Reading or Literacy
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with students and colleagues
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in teaching differentiated literacy instruction
  • Excellent Organizational skills
